GENERAL PROVISION OF HEALTH SERVICES IN
THE BOROUGH
Laboratory Facilities.
During the year, Mr. F. W. Edwards, F.R.I.C., F.C.S., retired
from his position as Public Analyst after an association of some
48 years with this Council, first as assistant and then for the
last 18 years as Public Analyst.
Mr. Edwards attended a meeting of the Council in December
and was presented by The Worshipful the Mayor with a Certificate
of Thanks in respect of his long service.
On 1st October, Mr. D. F. H. Button, A.R.C.S., F.R.I.C.,
Public Analyst to the Southwark Borough Council, was appointed
in his stead and the chemical analysis of food is now carried out
at the Council's Laboratory situated at The Health Centre,
Walworth Road, S.E.
The food and drugs part of the Council's bacteriological
examinations are dealt with at the Public Health Laboratory,
Colindale, and the Borough Council have arranged for the convenience
of local doctors and their patients that various bacteriological
investigations are made at the West London Hospital.
Our work at this laboratory includes the examination of
throat swabs and intestinal specimens, etc., and the service is
of much benefit in view of its immediate accessibility.
Throat swabs and faeces outfits are supplied free on
application to the Public Health Department to all medical
practitioners practising in the Borough.
Ambulance Facilities.
The London County Council is responsible, under the
National Health Service Act, 1946, for the provision of ambulance
facilities within the administrative County of London.
Hospitals.
The following hospitals are situated in Hammersmith:—
Hammersmith Hospital, Ducane Road, W.12.
Queen Charlotte's Maternity Hospital, Goldhawk Road,
W.6.
Royal Masonic Hospital, Ravenscourt Park, W.6.
West London Hospital, Hammersmith Road, W.6.
Hammersmith Hospital and West London Hospital are
designated as teaching Hospitals, and together with St. Mark's
