Sampling.
During the year 637 samples were submitted to the Public
Analyst for analysis by the Council's Food and Drugs Inspector.
Of this number, 9 or 1.4 per cent. were reported adulterated.
Markets.
There are three markets in the Borough, situate in
Bradmore Lane, Railway Approach and Norland Road. These
markets have been inspected throughout the year by the
District Inspector concerned and the Food and Drugs
Inspector. Structural alterations and improvements have been
made in connection with Section 13 of the Food and Drugs Act,
1938. One butcher's business and one refreshment business has
been entirely reconstructed. Washing facilities for staff have
been provided in 18 food premises.
Slaughterhouses.
In accordance with the Livestock (Restriction on Slaughtering
Order) 1940, the three slaughterhouses in the Borough
are not in use, but the licences have been renewed by the
occupiers.
Underground Bakehouses.
Section 54 of the Factory Act, 1937, provides that a basement
bakehouse shall not be used as a bakehouse unless it was so
used at the date of the passing of the Act, and a Certificate of
Suitability in respect thereof had been issued prior to that date.
The Act placed upon the Council the duty of examining
every basement bakehouse during the year following the
coming into operation of the Act, and in every fifth succeeding
year.
If, as the result of any such examination, the Council are
not satisfied that the bakehouse is suitable for use as regards
construction, height, light, ventilation and any hygienic
respect, they may give notice that the Certificate shall cease
to have effect after a specified period, and from that date the
bakehouse may not be used as such.
At the time of the passing of the Act, there were 17 underground
bakehouses in the Borough, to which the provisions of
the section applied. One bakehouse has since been demolished,
and the use of five as bakehouses discontinued. The remaining
eleven were inspected by the Food and Drugs Inspector and
schedules showing the respects in which they fell short of the
standard adopted by the Council were served. As a result of
this, the use of five more as bakehouses has been discontinued,
two are in use temporarily pending the building of new
bakehouses at ground floor level, and in four cases only have the
Certificates of Suitability been renewed following completion of
the work to the satisfaction of the Council.
