RATS AND MICE DESTRUCTION.
The Infestation Order, 1943, dated 6th May, 1943, was
made by the Minister of Food under the Defence General
Regulations, 1939.
On the llth June the Minister issued a direction to the
Council to submit to him a report on the extent to which
the Borough was infested by rats and mice. The Borough
was surveyed by the Sanitary Inspectors and reports
submitted to the Minister during August.
On the '29th October the Minister further directed the
Council to proceed on and from the 6th December with
the treatment of the Council's sewers. This was carried
out- by the Borough Engineer and Surveyor and the
Medical Officer of Health working in co-operation. Civil
Defence personnel from the Light Rescue Service assisted
in the work. As a result of this treatment it is estimated
that 21.000 rats were destroyed in the Council's sewers.
On the 9th November the Minister further directed the
Council to proceed with all necessary action for the remedying
of all infestations by rats and mice within the Borough.
The Council's Rodent Officer resigned during the year.
Operatives have been engaged and one of the Council's
Sanitary Inspectors has been placed in charge of
operations.
