A large proportion of the deaths, 45, equal to 38 per
cent., died in the first month, and of these 43 occurred in
the first week. Practically all of these may be ascribed
to ante-natal or intra-natal causes.
These facts point to the necessity of greater attention to
and control of the expectant mother, and to improved
obstetric practice.
The Number of Deaths from Prematurity decreased
from 33 to 27.
Infective Enteritis and Pneumonia.— Pneumonia
accounted for 25 deaths and infective enteritis for 21.
These may be very properly ascribed to lack of knowledge
on the part of the mother in the problems of infant feeding
and management.

The following table gives the births, infant deaths and infantile mortality rates in England and Wales, London and Hammersmith and the wards of the Boroughs for the year 1938:—
