Public Health Department,
Town Hall,
Hammersmith, W.6
To the Mayor, Aldermen and Councillors of the
Metropolitan Borough of Hammersmith.
Ladies and Gentlemen,—I beg to present to you my
Annual Report for the Year 1988. The report deals with
the vital statistics, and with the work carried out under
the direction of your Council during the year. The
statistical tables included directly or indirectly relate to the
Public Health of the Borough.
The death-rate of 12.9 is 0.1 per thousand greater than
the rate for the previous year. The infantile mortality
rate is 65 per 1,000 births.
The lowest rate was 61 per 1,000 births in 1927.
"Parkside"' and "Invermead" Maternity Homes
continue to be a great boon to those mothers who have no
suitable accommodation in their own homes.
The number of confinements in 1933 amounted to 460.
It is an obligation on every expectant mother booked
for "Parkside" or "Invermead" to attend the antinatal
centre at least once. Usually two, three or more
attendances are made.
The Council has received notice to terminate the agreement
relating to the use of "Parkside" for the admission
of maternity cases, during the coming year, owing to
the proposed establishment of a Post-Graduate School at
the Hammersmith Hospital.
Arrangements will be made to provide the services at
some other Institution.
