were those pupils who were considered to have poor general health
by virtue of the fact that they were over-weight.
Non-Routine Medical Examinations
The above examinations were carried out on 935 Handicapped
children who were examined to assess their special educational
needs. Similar non-routine medical examinations were undertaken
on 458 pupils prior to their being pronounced fit to take up parttime
employment. During 1970, 3,095 pupils were examined to
determine their fitness to undertake school journeys.
Selective surveys were carried out on 19,418 pupils, and 29,366
pupils were examined in comprehensive surveys. As a result of
this 467 children (1.17% of the total school roll), were found to
be verminous. A figure of 1.30% was reported for the I.L.E.A.
as a whole.
Child Guidance Clinic
This Unit, which moved to its present site at 83 Rochester Way,
S.E.3., in August, 1969, requires additional sessions and space to
meet the increasing demands made upon it.
Staffing of the Unit, which remains the same as in 1969, consists
of a Psychiatrist and an Educational Psychologist who provides
four sessions each per week. There is also a Psychiatric Social
Worker who attends for ten sessions a week.
During 1970, 52 cases were referred to the Unit. The waiting
list at the end of the year was 17 cases and 38 cases were still in
attendance. During the year 43 cases were closed and 24 cases were
withdrawn.
Because of overloading, the waiting list remained closed until
June, 1970. It is anticipated, however, that in 1971, the new
vacancy approved for an additional half-time Psychiatric Social
Worker will be filled. As a result of the temporary closure of the
waiting list the figure for new referrals was less than for the
previous year. The number of new cases has, however, started to
rise again.
Schools—General
In 1970 two new schools were opened in the Borough. These are
Wingfield J.M. & I., opened in April, and Nansen School for the
Partially Sighted, opened in September. One school for E.S.N.
Children (Thomas Doggett School) was closed in December.
