Early Detection of Cancer—The Directorate operates a
number of clinics at which cervical cytology and training in selfexamination
of the breast is carried out. During the year special
campaign material was devised and used extensively to remind
women of 25 and over of the existence of this service .
Greenwich Society for Mentally Handicapped Children—
Assistance was given during a campaign week organised by the
above Society by illustrating the facilities available at Council
premises for the training of the mentally handicapped where "open
days" were also held.
"Help the Disabled" Week—Full local coverage and support
was given to the above national campaign, including the mounting
of a major exhibition in the Victoria Hall of the Town Hall and
open days in local centres.
Posters and Leaflets
Full use is made of facilities for public display of posters illustrating
health education aspects. A different topic is selected for
each month. Leaflets relating to the current theme are also widely
distributed to places where the general public have access.
Normal distribution avenues for monthly topics include Council
enquiry desks and waiting rooms, libraries, general practitioner
and dentists' waiting rooms, public poster boards under the control
of the Recreational Services Committee, poster boards at local
stations, and health centres.
2. SCHOOLS
Reference was made in the 1969 Report of conferences held for
head teachers of schools in the Borough.
Much school health education is carried out on a continuing
basis by health visitors, school sisters and medical officers employed
in the School Health Service. However, for health education
to become an integrated factor in the school curriculum, permeating
all aspects of school life, teachers must accept the responsibility of
this vital matter.
Therefore, in addition to support of the professionals mentioned
above, considerable emphasis is laid on encouraging and assisting
teachers to incorporate and expand health education in their own
activities.
The encouraging start, commenced in 1969, continued unabated
through 1970. In all, the facilities of the Service were made use of
on 93 occasions and in 6 schools a series of connected visits were
instituted.
