re: Fluoridation of Drinking Water
ref. Your letter of 30.11.1971
Dear Sirs,
In our letter of 10.7.1971 we gave you the main facts
regarding the fluoridation of drinking water in the Wahlershausen
district of Kassel-Wilhelmshohe. As early as 1958, the continuation
of the fluoridation of drinking water became rather a problem because
the new Food Law passed by the German Federal Parliament established
the principle that drinking water must not contain any foreign matter
whatsoever. However, on application by Kassel Municipality at that
time, the Federal Ministry of Health gave special permission, which
was renewed annually, for fluoride to be added to the drinking water
supplied to the Wahlershausen district of Kassel.
For a number of years, the Association of Professional Water
Engineers (Technological and Analytical) has strongly opposed the
fluoridation of drinking water. The Association bases its opposition
both on the Food Law and on scientific papers which question the alleged
reduction in caries. Moreover, according to these scientific investigations,
the possibility of resultant damage to health cannot be
excluded. Water Works engineers, and especially those responsible for
management, regard it as their duty to protect drinking water from
any additives whatsoever, as part of the necessity for the protection
of the environment which has become so topical now.
The present position is that the fluoridation plant of the
municipal water works was taken out of service on 1.4.1971 as a
result of legal and health considerations. To our knowledge, there
is no other place in the German Federal Republic where any
fluoridation trials of drinking water are being undertaken.
We were pleased to learn of your interest and hope that this
reply will have been of some use to you.
Yours faithfully,
signed: MD Dr. Seebach
Medical Officer
