for the blind at Feathers Place in substitution for the displaced
workshop in Greenwich High Road; and garages for another 21
vehicles of the Directorate transport fleet.
Other projects for the future which have been accepted and are
approved or agreed in principle include the following: Junior
Training Centre, with a special care unit for juniors and adults,
in the Glyndon Redevelopment area—this unit will be transferred
to the ILEA on completion; a 48-place Old People's Home in the
Glyndon Redevelopment Phase II, combined with 12 close-link
flats; temporary Health Centre at Thamesmead; Maternity and
Child Welfare/School Health Clinic in the Kidbrooke Redevelopment;
an Old People's Home in the Kidbrooke Redevelopment; a
Training Centre for mentally handicapped adults and a 60-place
Day Nursery, both on suitable sites in Woolwich. In addition,
there are the plans for a main Health Centre at Thamesmead to
serve 48,000 of the population.
These achievements reflect great credit on elected Members and
Officers alike. There are deficiencies, there always will be, but the
combined Directorate has set a pace which will be a challenge to
any new emerging organisation. It is a testimony to the basic
soundness of the organisation and to the devotion of many members
and officers that the distractions of reorganisation have caused
so little disruption to the orderly progress of the services.
It is my pleasant duty to thank the many staff who have contributed
so much during the year. My Deputy, Dr. M. E. Watts,
has, as always, shouldered a disproportionate share of the burden.
I must also thank the members of the Health and Social Services
Committees for their confidence in their senior officers, which
means so much, and in particular I am grateful to the Chairmen
of the Health and Social Services, Councillors Wendy Mitchell
and Newland respectively, for their kindness and consideration to
me personally.
Your obedient Servant,
J. Kerr Brown,
Medical Officer of Health and
Director of Social Services.
