Recreation
The physical condition of the majority of the residents in the
homes is such as to require that their pastimes and other interests
be more on the quiescent and sober side. However, the daily
routine of television, radio, etc., is varied by fortnightly colour
film shows, "Bingo" sessions, handicraft instruction, "Music and
Movement" and the occasional party.
Summer and winter there are outings, big and small, to the
coast or country, to the shops or merely to the "pub".
Holiday Arrangements
Bedfont Hotel—Arrangements were made with the Spastic
Society for twelve severely handicapped residents to spend two
weeks at their hotel in Clacton.
Lawns Hotel, Ramsgate—Thirty-six residents with staff and
volunteer escorts enjoyed a normal hotel holiday at Ramsgate.
Exchange Holidays—Some of the less ambulant of the residents,
unable fully to appreciate the ordinary hotel holiday were
exchanged with residents of homes operated by the East Sussex
County Council and the Brighton County Borough Council.
During the fortnight's holiday, escorted outings were planned for
the Out-County residents who were given the opportunity of
visiting places of interest in the Borough and in Central London.
Reciprocal arrangements were made for the Greenwich residents on
holiday in Sussex.
Transfers of Residents
Requests continue to be received for residents to be moved from
one home to another, generally to facilitate visiting by their friends
and relatives. Whenever possible, transfers are arranged to meet
the wishes of residents.
Staff
Our Homes and residents were well served by the Staff, many
of whom could now be said to be old in the service of the Borough,
although the recruitment and appointment of senior supervisory
staff was still subject to delays and difficulties.
Voluntary Homes
Visits to Greenwich residents maintained in voluntary homes
continue to be made by Officers of the Directorate. The number
of such residents rose slightly during the current year as the
following table indicates:—
