REPORT OF THE
PRINCIPAL SCHOOL MEDICAL OFFICER
The Inner London Education Authority is responsible for the
School Health Service but, by virtue of an agreement required by
Section 32 of the London Government Act, 1963, there is joint use
by the Authority and the Borough of professional staff, premises
and equipment. The Medical Officer of Health is the Principal
School Medical Officer of the Inner London Education Authority
for the area and is responsible to that Authority for the day-to-day
running of the service.
Introduction
Routine medical inspection of school children in the Borough
continued as in previous years. These examinations include all
"entrants" to Infant Schools, children after their transfer to either
Junior or Secondary Schools and pupils during the penultimate
term before they leave school. Older pupils (15+ years) are also
examined during the term before they are due to leave school.
A total of 39,585 pupils were on the roll of schools in the London
Borough of Greenwich during 1969 and of these 15,661 (39.5%)
underwent routine medical inspections. A further 11,227 children
(28.3%) had non-routine medical inspections. As in previous years
parents were invited to attend on these occasions.
The general physical condition of pupils in the Borough was
slightly below the average of other Inner London Boroughs. In
1.11% of the children examined the physical condition was found
to be unsatisfactory compared with the Inner London Education
Authority's total of 0.42%. This percentage, however, included
