The incidence of disease, parasitic infestations and other conditions
rendering carcase meat and offal unsuitable for human
consumption followed closely a pattern similar to that of 1968
except with regard to tuberculosis where it is pleasing to report
that of the 9,591 cattle inspected not one incident of the disease
was observed.
There were 43½ tons of carcase meat and offal condemned during
the year of which the major portion was offal.
A slight decline in the number of ox livers rejected because of
infestation by liver fluke was registered and it is hoped that genuine
progress will now be made to eradicate completely this parasite
which over the years has been responsible for very large quantities
of liver being rejected.
Some 61 whole pig carcases were condemned because of multiple
abscesses a condition thought to be attributable to tail biting to
which I referred in my report for 1968.
