Sampling—Under provisions of the aforementioned Regulations,
Methylene Blue and Phosphatase tests are prescribed, the former
for assessing the "keeping" qualities of milk, and the latter for
estimating the efficiency of pasteurisation. In addition, a Turbidity
test is also prescribed for ascertaining the effectiveness of the heat
treatment of Sterilised Milk.
Two hundred and seven samples were submitted for the
Methylene Blue test, of which 3 failed. "Follow-up" samples taken
in respect of the 3 which failed proved satisfactory.
Satisfactory reports were received in respect of 235 milk samples
submitted for the Phosphatase test.
Forty-three samples of Sterilised Milk were submitted for the
Turbidity test and all proved satisfactory.
Analytical Examination of Milk—A total of 137 formal and
8 informal samples of designated milks were submitted for chemical
analysis and all proved to be genuine.
Two samples of cream were taken and found to be genuine.
Preserved Food and Ice Cream Premises
In accordance with the provisions of the Food and Drugs Act,
1955, Section 16, all premises with the exception of schools, clubs,
hotels or restaurants, used:—
(a) for the sale, or manufacture for the purpose of sale, of ice
cream, or storage of ice cream intended for sale; or
(b) for the preparation or manufacture of sausages or potted,
pressed, pickled or preserved food intended for sale;
are required to be registered by the owner or occupier with the
Local Authority.
Preserved Food Premises (meat, fish, etc.)—The total number of
premises on the register at 31st December, 1969, was 240.
Five hundred and eleven visits of inspection were made to
Preserved Food premises and Fried Fish shops as a result of which
a number of sanitary defects were remedied.
Ice Cream Premises—By the end of the year the total number
of registered Ice Cream premises stood at 590.
Visits to these premises were made on 112 occasions and 19
improvements were effected.
