Cemetery/Shooters Hill areas. By arrangement, control has always
been exercised by the Ministry which organised shootings or
gassings of the earths as appropriate.
During the current year, the Ministry indicated to the Council
that it would be withdrawing from such schemes and that after
1st January, 1970, local authorities themselves would have to
undertake these duties. Nevertheless, a Ministry advisory service
would still be made available to Councils in need.
It is this Council's intention to cover our particular situation
with a part-time appointment.
Fouling of Pavements, etc., by Dogs
Warning notices are fixed to lamp-posts in areas where complaints
have been received. When it is considered that the
warning has been fully noted they are then transferred to another
site.
Scavenging and Refuse Disposal, etc.
The collection of refuse and the conduct of Public Conveniences
in Greenwich are under the control of the Borough Engineer
and Surveyor who has kindly supplied me with the following
information :-
"(a) Street Cleansing and Street Gullies
The statistics are substantially the same as previous years,
namely, that there are 250 miles of roads in the Borough which
were cleansed with the following frequencies :-
at least once daily 9%
three times weekly 21%
twice weekly 70%
More than 100 sweepers were employed and, in addition, a
mechanical sweeper and sprinkler was used to deal with the main
traffic roads and shopping streets.
During the current year the Blackwall Tunnel Southern
Approach Road was opened and this is swept only by mechanical
sweeper.
There are 15,100 street gullies which were cleansed entirely by
mechanical means three times a year.
(b) Refuse Collection
Some 62,750 tons of refuse were collected from normal domestic
and bulk containers. Again, collection was generally weekly but
more frequent from blocks of flats and other premises.
