A restricted service, for cases of special need, was provided
during Bank Holidays and over the Christmas and Boxing Day
period 192 meals were delivered to elderly people without charge.
Emergency food packs were again distributed to old people on
the Mobile Meals Register to cover the possibility of the nondelivery
of a meal during severe weather.

Lunch Clubs
Lunch Club services continue to expand and 2 more clubs, viz.,
at Calderwood Street, S.E.I8., and at "Tegel" Old People's Home
at Simnel Road, S.E.12., were opened during the year. We are now
almost at the stage of being able to state that a Lunch Club is
within reasonable travelling distance of every elderly resident in
the Borough, a situation which not only ensures that as many as
possible enjoy at least one hot meal a day but also provides them
with the opportunity of companionship and social contacts which
are thereby made available.
During 1969 the number of meals served increased by over 21%
to a total of 233,027. Again, the cost of the meal was subvented by
the Council and the charge to members remained at 1s. 1d.
A number of elderly homebound persons are conveyed to Lunch
Clubs on days when an established Old People's Club meets on the
premises during the afternoon. Thus they can enjoy a hot lunch
and then stay to enjoy the social activities in the afternoon.
Geriatric Advisory Clinics
The clinics which came into operation in June, 1966, continued
to operate in 1969 for only six months since the Principal Medical
Officer who attended them was promoted to another appointment.
The clinics were held at:—
Abbey Centre, Eynsham Drive.
Anstridge Road Community Centre.
Directorate's Medical Room, Royal Hill.
Garland Road Centre.
Market Street Centre.
Plumstead Bathing Centre.
