Domiciliary Services
The Borough is divided into 9 midwifery areas, each with a fulltime
midwife, while a further two areas have a combined midwife/
district nurse.
During 1967 there were 682 home confinements. As in previous
years the trend continued towards hospital confinement under the
"early discharge" scheme. There were 377 such discharges, comDared
with 323 durine 1966.

Although total domiciliary confinements during the current year
declined by 192 to 682, the average for each midwife rose slightly
to 68. A rise of 54 in the number of mothers discharged home early
from hospital also to the care of midwives indicated increased
pressure on the service.
