Student Health Service
Avery Hill College is the only Teacher Training College
within the Borough boundaries. Medical services are provided in
the college by a local general practitioner but the assistance of
the Department is given in physical examinations of all college
leavers. Two hundred and forty-seven were examined during 1965.
Medical inspection services are also provided at Woolwich Polytechnic.
In this case students are examined during their training
and before completion of the course. B.C.G. vaccination was
also offered to all students, but the response in 1965 was disappointing.
It was felt that the students were not sufficiently aware
of the desirability of this vaccination and it is, therefore, intended
that special talks should be provided prior to the vaccination
sessions, so that students may be informed of the advantage of
vaccination and immunisation in genera!—information which they
can pass on to the parents and children whom they will encounter
throughout their teaching career.
