A total of 1,863 visits including 766 general inspections were
made to premises during the year. The principal matters requiring
attention were as follows :—

Lighting Standards—In Circular 9 (Supplement No. 1) dated
8th August, 1965, the Ministry of Labour requested that a special
report in narrative form in respect of lighting standards, both
natural and artificial, related to inspections carried out in the
last quarter of the current year should accompany his 1965
Report. In addition, to setting out points which the report
should cover, information was requested to be incorporated about
premises inspected during the month of November on :—
(i) the number of office premises inspected to check lighting
standards, either natural or artificial, at the working
place or plane, e.g., desk, filing cabinet, etc.;
(ii) standards of lighting in the working areas of shops, etc.,
stockrooms, packing departments, preparation rooms,
etc., compared with those in the selling areas.
As a result of the inspections made during the three months
period, the lighting standards, both natural and artificial, were
on the whole found to be reasonably satisfactory. In shop
selling areas the light provided ranged between 30 lumens per
square foot in the older shops to 180 lumens per square foot in
the modern supermarkets. No problems of excessive glare were
encountered.
