visitors were also taking part in lunch club work and helping with
the mobile meals service. The value of periodic written or verbal
reports to the organisers by the voluntary visitors received favourable
comment as did the Council's efforts to keep in touch with
isolated old people.
During March, 1965, a large number of volunteers attended
at the Town Hall, Woolwich, for a get-together in acknowledgement
of all the work done for the old people of Woolwich. Also in
March a special meeting of the Greenwich Old People's Welfare
Association was held for the winding up of the Association and to
thank voluntary workers for their valuable support in this work.
Both local Old People's Committees expressed the sincere hope
that everyone then working for the aged citizens in the area would
continue to take an active interest in the work for the elderly and
assist the new Borough Council in maintaining and extending the
first class services for the old people .
During the Summer months a meeting of voluntary workers
was held to explain the latest developments in the local work for
old people and to hear at first hand the views of the volunteers,
together with any suggestions for improving the service. The
meeting was attended by some 130 voluntary visitors, mobile meals
drivers and helpers, lunch club voluntary workers and other
volunteers, including car drivers, escorts, hairdressers and leaders
of local old people's clubs, working directly with the Council.
The New Eltham Townswomen's Guild again ran a stall at the
Mayor's Michaelmas Market during October, the proceeds being
donated to the Mayor's Christmas appeal for old people.
