Each week Dr. Thomas was able to accept 100 specimens
and, by the end of the current year, 100 women per week were
undergoing examination under the scheme.
Naturally statistics at this early stage are too meagre for
comparisons and analyses will have to be made over a period of
years. However, it can be stated that there were 5 deaths from
cancer of the cervix uteri in the Borough during 1965, giving a
rate of 0.02 per 1,000 population which compares very favourably
with the rate of 0.1 for England & Wales.
By 31st December, 1965, 436 specimens had been examined
and one positive result obtained. This patient, a 49 year old
mother of 4 children, has since undergone an operation. Progress
made in the sphere of cervical cytology by the end of the year
can be gauged by the following statistics:—
