Acute Encephalitis. (Infective or Post Infectious.)—Two
cases were notified during the year, only one of which was in
respect of a Greenwich resident. This notification, which was
posthumous, concerned a male child of 7 years who was found
dead when the family doctor was called to home and encephalitis
was established at the subsequent post mortem.
Investigations revealed that the child had recently had two
doses of oral polio prophylactic (Sabin), the last being given
some eleven days prior to death.
Ophthalmia Neonatorum.—In respect of this disease no
notifications were received. There was a nil return for the years
1962 and 1961. one for 1960, none for 1959 and one was recorded
for 1958.
Poliomyelitis.—It has previously been pointed out that the
vagaries of notification procedure have led to misleading statistics
concerning specified administrative areas but this proved of no
consequence during the current year as no notifications of poliomyelitis
were received.
Of school children undertaking a poliomyelitis inoculation
course, 46 received two and 87 received their third injection
during the year. For persons between the ages of 16 and 40 years
the figures were 103 and 83 respectively. In addition, a fourth
injection or doses of Sabin following 3 injections of Salk were given
to 844 children between the ages of 5 and 12 years. School children
completing a Sabin course numbered 1,584 and over school age
there were 156.
Malaria.—Compared with a nil return for this year and for
the years 1962, 1961 and 1960. one notification of benign tertian
was registered for 1959.
Tuberculosis.—During the year 32 notifications in respect of
confirmed cases of tuberculosis were received compared with 33
for 1962. Of these, 27 were of the pulmonary type and 5 nonpulmonary,
i.e., tuberculosis of parts of the body other than the
lungs.
