1959, was very well attended, nearly 200 old people being present,
many of whom were transported to the Church by voluntary
drivers. Our sincere thanks are due to the Vicar, Members of the
Church Council and the Church Organist for the facilities and
willing co-operation provided in arranging this Service. Tea was
provided in the Parish Hall by the Women's Fellowship under the
direction of Councillor Mrs. K. P. Bullard, the cost being met by
the Association, and this was greatly appreciated by the old people
who attended.
Entertainment.—The Nightmares Concert Party provided excellent
entertainment for over 600 elderly people in the Borough
Hall on 11th April, 1960. We are extremely grateful to the Borough
Council for granting us the free use of the Borough Hall and also
to the employees of Siemens (Brothers) Ltd. for giving the time to
rehearsing and presenting this concert.
Exhibition of Aids for the Disabled.—Arising out of a talk
given by the late Secretary, Mrs. E. M. Wigley, to a Quarterly Meeting,
an Exhibition of Aids for the Disabled was held in the Minor
Hall on the 14th and 15th June, 1960. Exhibits were provided by
the British Red Cross Society, Miller Hospital and various industrial
firms and approximately 300 persons visited the Exhibition. Whilst
this is not a large number, we feel that we have brought these aids
to the notice of persons such as Doctors, Hospital Staffs, etc., who
are in a position to recommend them to infirm and disabled persons,
thus enabling them to live a fuller and more independent life.
Leaflets on Welfare Services.—The Central Consultative Committee
on the Welfare of Old People, in conjunction with the Ministry
of Pensions, propose to issue leaflets throughout the Metropolitan
Police Area to new Old Age Pensioners when they collect
their Pension books. These leaflets will provide details of the welfare
services for old people together with the addresses of the local
Old People's organisations. We have agreed to participate in this
scheme and, in addition, have arranged to issue a local leaflet giving
detailed information regarding all services available to old people
in the Borough of Greenwich. It is hoped that these latter leaflets
will be available for distribution in the near future.
Acknowledgments.—It is not possible to mention individually
all who have helped with the work of the Association during the
past year and we would, therefore, like to say a sincere " thank
you " to all the voluntary workers who have given up their time so
willingly on behalf of the old people. We feel, however, that we
must make special mention of the Greenwich Borough Council for
the very many facilities made available to us and especially for the
financial grants which have amounted to a considerable sum. As
mentioned earlier in the Report, due to the generosity of the
