A second smoke control area is contemplated of approximately
58 acres and some 1,500 houses and sundry other buildings and a
preliminary survey is now being carried out. This area is bounded
on the north side by Mauritius Road, on the north-east by Tunnel
Avenue, on the south by Woolwich Road and on the west by
Christchurch Way. The Ministry's approval is expected to be
obtained during the latter half of 1960.
In his Circular 5/59 the Minister of Housing and Local
Government stated that he had received an encouraging response
by local authorities to the Clean Air Act but that he hoped it would
be possible to make faster progress, especially in the "black"
areas (which includes London). Councils were asked to consider
their domestic smoke problem as a whole, to decide on the smoke
control orders that are needed and in what priority they should be
made, to estimate how long the whole operation is likely to take, to
prepare a phased programme for establishing smoke control areas
over the next five years and finally to inform the Minister by the
30th June, 1959, of their conclusions.
Pollution Recording.—Two atmospheric pollution measuring
stations are maintained by the Council, one at the Town Hall and
the other at Charlton House and the following tables give the daily
mean concentration of smoke and sulphur dioxide as calculated on
readings taken at the Council's two stations during 1959:—
