Diseases of the Respiratory System.—There were altogether
154 deaths from these diseases. Bronchitis accounting for
73 and Pneumonia (all forms) for 76. The total shows an increase
of 19 over that of the previous year and there was an increase of 27
deaths from Pneumonia compared with a reduction of 3 in regard
to Bronchitis.
Of the total deaths, 2 were children under one year ot age
and 126 were in respect of persons 65 years and over.
Influenza.—There were 5 deaths attributed to this cause
during the year compared with 2 returned for last year and 8 for
1957. Three were registered for 1956. one in 1955, none in 1954
but 15 were recorded during 1953.
Deaths from Violence.—These numbered 29 including 10
from Motor Vehicle Accidents, 7 from Suicide and the remainder
being accounted for under the heading of "All Other Accidents."
The number of deaths from Motor Vehicle Accidents was
identical with that of the previous year while the figure for Suicide
showed a decrease of 4.
