BIRTHS
The total number of live births registered in the Borough during
the year was 1,466 and of this number 1,072 occurred in St.
Alfege's Hospital, and 303 in private dwellings. In 672 cases the
parents resided outside the Borough and these births were consequently
transferred to their appropriate districts, leaving a figure of
794. To this must be added 534 births belonging to the Borough
which took place in Institutions outside the Borough, thus making
a final figure for Greenwich of 1,328, a decrease of 7 from that of
the previous year. Of this total 689 were males and 639 females.

The Birth Rate for the year, calculated on the figure of 1,328
births, is 14.97 per thousand of the population, 0.05 lower than
that for 1958. The average rate for the previous ten years is 15.30.
The Greenwich Comparability Factor for births is 0.94 which gives
an adjusted rate of 14.07.
The Rates for the County of London and England and Wales
are 17.3 and 16.5 respectively.
Illegitimate Births which numbered 66 (representing 4.9 per
cent, of the total live births) showed a decrease of 10 from those
of the previous year.
The number of Still Births registered was 22 (13 males - 9
females), which is equivalent to a rate of 16.29 per 1.000 total births,
a reduction of 4.97 from that of 1958.
