Tuberculosis

The Clinic tuberculosis register is as under:—

MenWomenBoysGirlsTotal
Pulmonary Tuberculosis53845620221,036
Non-pulmonary Tuberculosis13186744
1,080

The total figure for 1958 was 1,078 and for 1957 it was 1,075.
This figure remains almost constant because many tuberculous
patients who are apparently healed continue to attend the Clinic for
follow-up supervision as a necessary precaution against relapse.
Furthermore a number of these patients, whose disease has been
healed by chemotherapy or surgical treatment, remain very disabled
due to breathlessness and subject to bronchitis and this is another
reason why they remain under supervision.
The total number of new out-patients referred to the Clinic was
1,638 and total number of attendances 6,592. In 1958 the total
number of attendances was 5,958. As the tuberculous patients are
attending less frequently as time goes on, the attendance figure
represents an increase of patients attending for non-tuberculous
chest conditions.
There were 17 deaths of patients on the Clinic register from all
causes, of which 12 were from the result of their pulmonary tuberculosis.
Forty-three new cases of pulmonary tuberculosis were notified
during the year; last year there were 53 new cases notified and 75
in 1957. The 43 new cases were in the undermentioned age
groups:—

and one aged 33, peritonitis.
