The Borough receives imported food in large quantities and the
Food Inspectors spend a great deal of time examining a wide variety
of food stuffs from all over the world. Infected egg products were
again troublesome and representations were made by the Council
to the Ministry (so far without success) to make pasteurisation or
some sterilising process obligatory before frozen or dried eggs are
allowed to be imported. One cannot but be disappointed at the
apparently slow progress being made in the matter.
The new Food Hygiene Regulations have now been in operation
for four years and while there are naturally some premises
which lag behind in equipment and desirable practices, generally the
standard of cleanliness in food shops and cafes in the Borough is
of a very high order.
Once again it is my pleasure to acknowledge the help and
support which I have received from the Chairman and ViceChairman
of my Committee, and to the staff of the department I
offer my thanks for their loyalty and diligence.
I have the honour to be,
Your obedient Servant,
J. Kerr Brown,
Medical Officer of Health.
