Housing
Legislation.—Housing Act, 1957.—With the exception of
certain financial provisions which are to be the subject of future
legislation, this Act which became effective on 1st September,
consolidated previous housing legislation and, as a result of a court
decision, modified the provisions relating to the closure of underground
rooms.
Procedure under Housing Act, 1936.—The following
representation was made under Part II of the above Act during
1957 :—
Section 11.—Houses unfit for human habitation and not capable
at reasonable expense of being rendered so fit.

Slum Clearance.—The following area represented by the Council
under Part III of the above Act received the Minister's approval on
25th September, 1957 :

Procedure under Housing Act, 1957.—The following
representation was made under Part II of the above Act during
1957 :—
Section 18.—Part of building unfit for human habitation, i.e.
a room, the surface of the floor of which is more than
3ft. below adjoining ground level and defective in
matters listed in Section 4 of the said Act.

Housing Act, 1949—Improvement Grants.—Section 20 of the
Housing Act, 1949, as modified by Section 16 of the Housing Repairs
and Rents Act, 1954, empowers local authorities to make grants
to private owners for improvements and conversions of sums up to
£400 or half the cost whichever is the less where the dwellings
would provide satisfactory accommodation for 'more than fifteen
years.'
During the year, twenty-four grants were so made.
