Aged and Physically Handicapped Persons.—With the
expectation of life increasing and a corresponding decline in the
birth rate, the resulting ratio of elderly people in the community is
rising steadily and it is anticipated that by 1977 people over the age
of 65. years will form one fifth of the total population. In these
circumstances it is to be expected that the problems associated
with old age will increase and this has been our experience at
Greenwich.
Recognising the implications of the situation, the Council have
made generous grants to the Greenwich Old People's Welfare
Association for the provision of holidays and recreational facilities.
Information, advice and assistance are readily available from the
Public Health Department and in this respect great reliance is placed
