One area, that comprising the North West, North and Marsh
wards, was considered and some 3,900 dwellings were inspected.
Two other surveys were made before eventually an area of approximately
76 acres bounded by Vanbrugh Hill, Woolwich Road,
Victoria Way and the Southern Railway was finally chosen as one
which, being centrally situated, would readily lend itself to extension
in any direction.
After a detailed inspection has been carried out and the necessary
data collated, the matter will be submitted to the Council for eventual
representation to the Minister.
Pollution Recording.—Two atmospheric pollution measuring
stations are maintained by the Council, one at the Town Hall and
the other at Charlton House and the following tables give the daily
mean concentration of smoke and sulphur dioxide as calculated on
readings taken at the Council's two stations during 1957 :—
