During the year, 10 notifications were received of which I was
re-diagnosed as virus meningitis (cocksackie 'B').
Of the 9 confirmed cases, only 7 were in respect of Greenwich
residents and a further case concerning a resident notified to Lewisham
gave a final total of 8 for the Borough. Of these 3 were of the
paralytic type and 5 non-paralytic, six being children of school-age.
All cases received hospital treatment and there were no deaths.
Mataria.—One notification of benign tertian believed to have
been contracted abroad was received from the Royal Herbert
Hospital in connection with a serviceman of 21 years.
Tuberculosis.—During the year 80 notifications in respect of
confirmed cases of tuberculosis were received compared with 86
for 1956. Of these, 77 were of the pulmonary type and 3 nonpulmonary,
i.e., tuberculosis of parts of the body other than the
lungs.
