The Housing Act, 1957, was a consolidating measure embracing
enactments relative to housing legislation passed during the last
few years.
Services relating to old persons continue to expand and are
fulfilling a great need, particularly the laundry service and the home
baths. The Geriatric Unit at St. Alfege's Hospital continues to
give priority to our cases on medical and social grounds and the
Department is grateful for the consideration we receive from Dr.
Mester. Similarly, the institution accommodation of the L.C.C.
serves a very useful purpose and we are glad of the co-operation we
receive. An account of the work of the Old People's Association is
also included and mention must be made of the work done by the
Red Cross, the W.V.S. and the Association in connection with
Meals-on-Wheels, holidays, outings, Christmas parcels, ' Darby and
Joan' Clubs, and the many other welfare services devoted to the
old folk.
In conclusion, I wish to thank the Chairman and the ViceChairman
of the Health Committee for their help and support. The
Town Clerk, his deputy and my Chief Officer colleagues have shown
me much kindness and I am glad to record my gratitude to the staff
for loyalty and application to duty.
I have the honour to be,
Your obedient Servant,
J. Kerr Brown,
Medical Officer of HeaUh
