Christmas week. We know that the joy which these parcels gave
to the recipients was sufficient thanks to the helpers who gave up
so much of their time in ensuring the success of the scheme.
Carol Service.—The Annual Carol Service held this year in the
Parish Church of St. Alfege on the 6th December was very successful
in that over 300 elderly persons were present. We are sure that
those who attended enjoyed the Service very much indeed. We
appreciate very much the work of those helpers who came along and
assisted in giving those attending some light refreshment after the
Service.
Welfare Scheme for Old People.—We are pleased to report that
the Executive Committee has been able to increase the scheme
whereby elderly persons can obtain Welfare Foods at reduced prices,
and also the cheap launderette facilities.
We are sure that the old people have again benefited from these
schemes and we are indebted and most grateful to the Women's
Voluntary Service for carrying out the distribution of the Welfare
Foods.
Quarterly Meeting.—The Quarterly Meetings of the Association
have been very well attended and we are most grateful to the speakers
who have come along to address the members present on the
various aspects of old people's welfare.
Acknowledgments.—It is not possible to mention individually
all who have helped with the work amongst the old people during
the year and we would therefore like to say a sincere " thank you "
to all the voluntary workers who have given up their time so willingly
in this work. We feel, however, that we must make special mention
of the Greenwich Borough Council for the many facilities offered to
us and the financial grants which have totalled a considerable sum ;
to the Town Clerk, the Medical Officer of Health, the Borough Treasurer
and the Area Officer of the National Assistance Board and their
staffs.
We, the Executive Committee are inspired by the willing
co-operation of all the voluntary helpers and friends and not least
by the appreciation shown by the old people themselves. We feel
that it is a privilege to engage in this work and we shall endeavour
to extend the scope and influence of it to every old person within
the Metropolitan Borough of Greenwich."
