number of the elderly population of the Borough, and apart from
the small grant made each year by the Borough Council and in many
cases the facilities provided for holding their Clubs, they are selfsupporting,
and this, we feel, is a fine achievement, due, to a large
extent, to the untiring efforts of the persons who organise the Clubs
and the helpers encouraged no doubt by the gratitude of those who
attend them.
On behalf of the old people we would like to extend our sincere
thanks to the leaders of these clubs and their assistants, and also
for the grants and facilities mentioned above.
For the third consecutive year we are able to report that an
additional Club has been opened. This time it is the turn of the
National Federation of Old Age Pensioners Associations, who found
that there was sufficient demand in the West Greenwich area for a
branch to be formed, and we are pleased to report that here again
the Borough Council kindly granted the Branch facilities in the
Minor Hall on Tuesday afternoons.
This now means that there are eleven clubs in the Borough
meeting each week, which provide an opportunity for their members
to meet for social intercourse, entertainment and fellowship. They
are held at:—
Oakland House, Shooter's Hill Road.
560, Woolwich Road.
The Town Hall, S.E.10.
The Co-operative Hall, Park Vista.
The Parish Hall, Swallowfield Road, Charlton.
St. John's Hall, Furzefield Road, Charlton.
The Albany Institute, Creek Road.
Heathside Social Club, Blackheath Hill.
Central Library, and
Two Clubs at Charlton House.
Day Rooms at Community Centres.—Since submitting our re port
to you at the last Annual Meeting the Executive Committee has
given lengthy and detailed consideration to the supplementation
of the Old People's Clubs. These Clubs do, of course, meet once a
week and in some instances are limited in space and therefore the
number of persons who can attend is also limited.
