procedure have led to misleading statistics concerning specified
administrative areas and this is emphasised by the notifications
received in respect of poliomyelitis.
During the year, 10 notifications were received of which 1 was
re-diagnosed. Of the 9 confirmed cases, only 5 were in respect of
Greenwich residents and a further case concerning a resident
notified to Lewisham gave a final total of 6 for the Borough. Of
these 4 were of the paralytic type and 2 non-paralytic, and all were
children of 8 years or under.
The grandparents of one case refused hospital treatment but
no deaths were recorded.
Malaria.—One notification of benign tertian believed to have
been contracted abroad was received from the Royal Herbert
Hospital in connection with a serviceman of 20 years.
Tuberculosis.—During the year 86 notifications in respect of
confirmed cases of tuberculosis were received compared with 99
for 1955. Of these, 77 were of the pulmonary type and 9 nonpulmonary,
i.e., tuberculosis of parts of the body other than the
lunes.

Disinfection was offered and carried out in 23 cases including
56 rooms and 241 articles of clothing and bedding, etc.
