BIRTHS
The total number of live births registered in the Borough during
the year was 1,328 and of this number 969 occurred in St. Alfege'a
Hospital, and 359 in private dwellings. In 544 cases the parents
resided outside the Borough and the births were consequently
transferred to the appropriate districts, leaving a figure of 784.
To this must be added 527 births belonging to the Borough which
took place in Institutions outside the Borough, thus making a final
figure for Greenwich of 1,311, a decrease of 42 from that of the
previous year. Of this total 701 were males and 610 females.

The Birth Rate for the year, calculated on the figure of 1,311
births, is 14.69 per thousand of the population, 0.29 lower than that
for 1954. The average rate for the previous ten years is 17.89.
The Greenwich Comparability Factor for births is 0.93 which gives
an adjusted rate of 13.66.
The Rates for the County of London and England and Wales
are 15.1 and 15.0 respectively.
Illegitimate Births which numbered 60 (representing 4.5 per
cent, of the total live births) showed a decrease of 9 from those of
the previous year.
The number of Still Births registered was 28 (12 males - 16
females), which is equivalent to a rate of 20.91 per 1,000 total births,
an increase of 2.77 over that of 1954.
