Certain promising lines of treatment are being investigated at
the Clinic. Besides routine breathing exercises and measures to
promote bronchial drainage, long term antibiotic treatment has
been very successful in a few patients. This work is continuing.
There is definite statistical evidence that the incidence of
carcinoma of the lung is increasing. Of 24 new cases diagnosed at
the Greenwich Chest Clinic in 1955, 13 were after investigation
considered operable and 8 of these eventually had the growth
resected. At the end of the year of the original 24 cases only 15
were still alive. Recent figures suggest that of operable cases only
25—30% survive five years. Of the inoperable ones the survival
time can usually be measured only in months.
