cost is subsidised by that authority. During the year an average
of about 30 homebound persons had meals delivered twice weekly
and in about 6 cases, meals were delivered three or four times per
week. The average number of meals brought to the homebound
was 108. Another 60 were delivered weekly to the various Old
People's Clubs in the Borough.
The London County Council have intimated that their local
kitchen from which the meals are obtained will be closing in January
and negotiations are in hand with a local restaurant for the supply
of the meals. It has long been realised that the standard meal
prepared at the London County Council kitchens for the general
public is not the best diet for all old people and it is hoped that the
anticipated new arrangements will allow more suitable and varied
menus. Provided that a meal can be obtained for l/6d. the London
County Council will be prepared to continue to subsidize the cost
and it is not intended that the old people will have to pay any more
than their present contribution of lOd. per meal.
Old People's Welfare Association.—Briefly, the purpose of the
National Old People's Welfare Committee is " to study the needs of
old people and to promote measures for their wellbeing," and the
Greenwich Old People's Welfare Association which was set up in
July of this year has for its object the implementation of these aims.
In general, this new Association co-ordinates the activities of
9 Old People's Clubs in the Borough which provide for the physical
and mental recreation of their members by arranging coach-outings,
garden parties, Christmas, New Year and anniversary parties, etc.
In one instance, with the co-operation of the " Nightmares' Concert
Party " from Siemens Brothers, Charlton, a concert was staged for
the entertainment of some 700 old people.
During the year, grants were made by the Council to voluntary
organisations as under :—
£250 ... British Red Cross Society for " Meals on Wheels "
scheme.
£101 ... Women's Voluntary Services in respect of six
Darby & Joan Clubs.
£10 ... Old Age Pensioners' Association, Parish Hall,
Swallowfield Road, S.E.7.
£10 ... Old Age Pensioners' Association, Park Vista,
S.E.10.
£10 ... St. John's Old Folks' Club, Furzefield Road, S.E.3.
