Bakehouses.—Of the 16 premises in the Borough being used
as bakehouses at the end of the year, 4 were of the basement type
in respect of which Suitability Certificates were in operation.
Under the provisions of Section 54 of the Factories Act, 1937, all
four basement premises were subjected to their quinquennial
inspection and in two cases the bakehouses were found to be satisfactory
for continuance of their respective Certificates of Suitability.
Suitability certificates in respect of the other two basement bakehouses,
viz : 29, Blackheath Hill, S.E.10 and 115, Trafalgar Road,
S.E.10., were temporarily extended until such time as the alternative
premises at Plumbridge Street, S.E.10 were completed.
Bakehouses and bakers' shops were visited on 175 occasions and,
as a result of the inspections, 15 improvements were realised. These
alterations were effected solely by informal action.
Catering Establishments.—Public demand for communal
catering continues and as a result of this practice of ' eating out'
the inspection and supervision of cafes, restaurants, works' canteens
etc., remains one of the most important duties of the Food Inspectors.
Disregard of normal hygiene in the handling and preparation of
food at such establishments can lead to an outbreak of food poisoning
on a large scale and it is a tribute to the Inspectors' vigilance
that no such outbreaks have occurred.
A publication entitled' Clean Catering ' was prepared and issued
by the Ministry of Food towards the end of the current year. In
this booklet advice is given on the most practical ways for achieving
a high standard of hygiene and is intended not only for existing focd
caterers but also for those entering this field for the first time. The
Food Inspectors found this a useful publication to recommend to
proprietors in respect of their premises and with the assistance of
the Greenwich Guild of Hygiene, a fair measure of success in improving
the standards of food preparation and handling in the Borough
can be claimed.
As a result of 502 visits of inspection to the catering establishments
insanitary conditions were remedied and improvements
effected at 32 premises. The following is a summary of the improvements
carried out:—
