this service and called for faecal samples from suspects, as a result
of which a number of carriers were revealed.
Altogether investigations were carried out in respect of 277
persons which necessitated the taking of 483 specimens, the writing
of 270 letters to doctors, families and other interested parties and
the return of 80 completed forms to the London County Council for
research purposes.

Treatment of all positive cases was continued until two consecutive
specimens proved bacteriologically negative.
Of the 62 cases treated at home, 48 were completely tractable
and cleared up immediately on the institution of treatment. The
remainder, with the exception of one case which removed to Great
Yarmouth, although proving somewhat difficult were finally freed
from infection.
Area distribution was as follows :—East Greenwich 16 ; West
Greenwich 2 ; St. Nicholas, Deptford 44 and Charlton and Kidbrooke
38.
Scabies.—Twelve cases were so notified compared with 10 for
the previous year.
Treatment of all cases of scabies is carried out at the Tunnel
Avenue Centre.
Puerperal Pyrexia.—During the year 10 notifications were
received in accordance with the 1951 Regulations but from other
sources a further 24 cases concerning residents were brought to the
notice of the department.
All patients received hospital treatment. There were no
fatalities.
