Medical Practitioners for bacteriological investigation and of these
336 were reported to be negative and 125 positive for Tuberculosis.
Disinfection was offered and carried out in 55 cases including
91 rooms and 514 articles of bedding, etc. Disinfectant was supplied
to patients to disinfect sputum pots, etc., where necessary.
Verminous Conditions.—No change has taken place in the
procedure adopted to combat infestation by lice and general
verminous conditions.
All notified cases of Scabies, as also suspected cases, are followed
up and the homes visited by the Woman Sanitary Inspector, assisted
by a qualified nurse who gives advice and instruction concerning
treatment.
School children are dealt with at the Council's Cleansing
Station at Tunnel Avenue. Children under 5 years of age and adults
are treated at the Bathing Centre attached to St. Alfege's Hospital.
There was again a marked decrease in the number of cases
treated at the two Centres, the total attendances being 3,822 as
compared with 5,897 for the previous year and 7,238 for the year
1945.
It is very satisfactory to note the steady decline in the number
of notified Scabies cases. In the year 1944, the first complete year
of notification there were 405 cases ; this was followed by 312 in
1945, 179 in 1946 and 83 for the period under review. This is all
the more remarkable when taking into consideration the present
day difficulties encountered in obtaining sufficient soap, towels,
underclothing etc.

The following return summarises the work carried out during the year:—
