Prevalence of, and Control Over, Infectious and Other
Diseases.
The total number of Infectious Diseases actually notified was
1,057, but in 44 cases the diagnosis was not confirmed, thus reducing
the total to 1,013. The number for the years 1946, 1945 and 1944
were 1,691, 1,216 and 1,397 respectively.
Once again it is gratifying to report that there was no serious
outbreak of disease during the year. It is noteworthy to record
the extraordinarily low figure for Diphtheria, viz. 7.
Particulars relating to the age groups and districts are shown
in the tables at the end of the Report.
Smallpox.—No cases of this disease were notified during the
year. There were, however, several contacts reported arriving in the
Borough from abroad; these were kept under observation for the
requisite period.
Public Health (Smallpox Prevention) Regulations,
1917,—It was not found necessary for your Medical Officer of Health
to undertake any vaccinations during the year.
Details respecting vaccination in the Borough are given in the
Appendix to the Report.
Me asles.—Altogether there were 278 oases of Measles notified,
5 of which were attributed to other causes, thus the actual number
was 273 as compared with 902 for the previous year and 341 for the
year 1945. Of the total of 273 cases 24 related to children under
1 year and 135 between the ages of 1-5 years. The distribution of
the cases was as follows:—126 in East Greenwich, 28 in West
Greenwich, 8 in St. Nicholas, Deptford, and 111 in Charlton and
Kidbrooke. 17 were removed to Hospital for treatment. Only one
case proved fatal.
Whooping Cough.—Out of 210 cases notified only 2 were not
oonfirmed as suffering from Whooping Cough. 24 were under 1 year
of age and 108 between the ages of 1-5 years. There were 211 and
133 respectively for the years 1946 and 1945. 77 occurred in East
Greenwich, 62 in West Greenwich, 6 in St. Nicholas, Deptford and
63 in Charlton and Kidbrooke.
Sixteen cases were removed to Hospital for treatment.
There was one fatal case.
