Smoke Abatement.—The great interest shown concerning this
problem was apparent at the annual conference of the National
Smoke Abatement Society held at Edinburgh in October, which
drew the largest number of delegates in the history of the Society.
Arising out of the many interesting discussions on atmospheric
pollution, it was pointed out that coal fired electricity stations
were the main source of complaints regarding grit-emission. This
was due to the high demand, causing overloading of generators,
and also to the degrading of fuel.
Nuisance caused by the emission of grit from the Greenwich
Generating Station has been a source of annoyance to the inhabitants
in the vicinity for some years, and following litigation in 1938,
an undertaking was given by the London Passenger Transport
Board to install 16 new boilers to be fitted with a special type of
grit arrestor, and further to equip 10 old boilers with similar grit
arrestor equipment.
The Undertaking also took the form of an agreement between
the Council's Consultant and the Board's representative to agree to
a standard of grit emission to be observed in future operations.
The standard was to be based on the results of tests after the
equipment had been installed and alterations carried out.
In view of the Board's plea that owing to the greatly inferior
fuel now being supplied the tests would not give a true or fair
indication of the grit arrestor plant, it was decided not to press
the Council's claim at the present time.
