Verminous Conditions.—No change has taken place in the
procedure adopted to combat infestation by lice and general verminous
conditions.
All notified cases of Scabies, as also suspected cases, are followed
up and the homes visited by the Woman Sanitary Inspector,
assisted by a qualified nurse who gives advice and instruction concerning
treatment.
School children are dealt with at the Council's Cleansing Station
at Tunnel Avenue. Children under 5 years of age and adults are
treated at the Bathing Centre attached to St. Alfege's Hospital.
There was a marked decrease in the number of cases treated
at the two Centres, the total attendances being 5,897 as compared
with 7,238 for the previous year.
It will be noted that the number of Scabies notifications fell
by approximately 50%. This suggests that with the return from war
to peace conditions, more attention has been given to personal
hygiene and cleanliness in the home, notwithstanding the overcrowded
and drab surroundings generally under which many
families are living at the present time.

The following return summarises the work carried out during the year:—
