BIRTHS.
The total number of births registered in the Borough during
the year was 2,208 of which 1,425 occurred in St. Alfege's Hospital,
85 in various Nursing Homes and 698 in private dwellings.
In 1,060 cases the parents resided in areas outside the Borough
and the births were consequently transferred to the appropriate
districts.
Five hundred and eighty-seven births belonging to the Borough
took place in Institutions outside the Borough Area; thus the
actual figure for Greenwich becomes 1,735, an increase of 553 over
the previous year, 923 were males and 812 females.
This is equivalent to a Birth Rate of 22.65 per thousand of the
population and is 4.06 higher than the rate for 1945. This is the
highest rate since the year 1921 when it was 22.70 per thousand.
The average for the previous 10 years was 16.41.
The Rates for the County of London and for England and Wales
were 21.5 and 19.1 per thousand.
DEATHS.
The net number of deaths registered during 1946 was 874, of
which 500 were males and 374 females, as compared with 813 for
last year.
This gives a crude death rate for the Borough of 11.38 per
thousand of the population which is 1.40 lower than for the previous
year and considerably below the average for the last 10 years,
viz., 13.44.
The Death Rates for the County of London and for England
and Wales are 12.7 and 11.5 respectively.
The inset table showing causes of deaths at all ages has been
supplied by the Registrar-General and is included in accordance
with requests contained in the Ministry of Health Circular No. 1728.
