Fortunately during the remainder of the year under review, the
occasion did not arise to put the scheme into effect.
Verminous Conditions.—No change has taken place in the
procedure adopted to combat infestation by lice and general
verminous conditions.
All notified cases of Scabies, as also suspected, cases are followed
up and the homes visited by the Woman Sanitary Inspector,
assisted by a qualified nurse who gives advice and instruction
concerning treatment.
School children arc dealt with at the Council's Cleansing
Station at Tunnel Avenue.- Children under 5 years of age and
adults were treated at the Seamen's Hospital Bathing Centre up to
March, when it became necessary to vacate the premises. Fortunately
arrangements were made to transfer the Centre to a building
attached to St. Alfege's Hospital, which had been formerly used as a
First Aid Post.
The total attendances at the two Centres was 7,238 as compared
with 6,694 for the previous year. No doubt part of this increase
can be attributed to the return of children from evacuation areas to
the overcrowded conditions under which many families are living at
the present time. Exceptional cases were also found to require at
least six treatments before they could be considered free from
verminous conditions.

The following return summarises the work earned out during the year:—

Disinfection of Premises.—The usual routine has been
followed regarding the disinfection of rooms of persons suffering
from notifiable infectious diseases.
There were many calls on the Disinfecting Staff from the various
Civil Defence Services, and on the termination of hostilities, special
arrangements were entered into with the National Fire Service and
no less than 2,188 mattresses and 2,038 pillows were disinfected.
The following Return shows in detail the amount of work
performed during the year:—
