INFANTILE MORTALITY.
The Infantile Mortality rate measured by the deaths of children
under 1 year of age to the number of live births registered was
42 per 1,000 births. This is the lowest rate ever recorded in the
Borough, and is even four points below the figure returned in the
year 1930, when Infantile Mortality rates generally throughout
the Country were regarded as somewhat phenomenal. The average
for the last ten years is 62.
The total number of deaths during the year was 55 as compared
with 116, 80, 66 and 67, the respective figures for the years 1934,
1935, 1936 and 1937.
Locally the variations were 31 per 1,000 births in St. Nicholas,
Deptford, 35 in East Greenwich, 41 in Charlton and Kidbrooke,
to 58 in West Greenwich.
A further reference to the Infantile Mortality rate will be
found in the Section devoted to Maternity and Child Welfare,
whilst a table showing the causes of death and age3, is included
in the Appendix of the Report.
