REPORT OF THE TUBERCULOSIS OFFICER.
To The Medical Officer of Health.
Sir,
I beg to submit the report for 1936. It is somewhat condensed
as the Council's scheme has been fully described in previous years
and my appointment has been too recent to allow the making of
a comprehensive survey.
Good relations continue to exist between the general practitioners
of the area and the Dispensary. Inter-departmental
co-operation has also been satisfactory.
Notifications.—Notifications were received during the year
in respect of 128 pulmonary and 32 non-pulmonary cases, representing
an incidence of 1.25 per 1,000 population for the pulmonary
form and 0.24 for the non-pulmonary forms of the disease.
At the end of 1936 the notification register consisted of 647
cases as compared with 647 in 1935. The total is made up as
follows:—
Adults. Children. Total.
Males. Females.
Pulmonary 253 189 48 490
Non-pulmonary 31 36 90 157
Deaths.—Deaths during 1936 numbered 73, equalling a rate
of .76 per 1,000 population for all forms of the disease. The
pulmonary type accounted for 66 of the deaths, representing a
death rate of .68.

The Death Notification interval of the 66 persons who died from pulmonary tuberculosis in 1936 is shown below:—

Information from Death Returns6
Died within one month of notification7
Died within three months of notification5
Died within six months of notification4
Died over six months of notification44

In the case of 6 deaths which occurred before notification
the reasons obtained on enquiry were as follows:—
a. In five cases, tuberculosis was discovered as a contributory
oause of death on post mortem examination.
b. In one case, the Medical Practitioner attending the
patient for tuberculosis, was under the impression
that the case had been previously notified.
