SECTION D.
HOUSING.
Slum Clearance.—During the year 19 Representations were
placed before the Council, and the slum clearance programme is
being carried out according to plan. Areas represented involved
223 houses. Cloarance Orders have been made in respect of 13
areas. Eight Enquiries have been held by the Minister of Health
either in connection with Clearance Orders or Compulsory Purchase
Orders.
Re-housing.—Provision of dwellings for re-housing the families
is being maintained, but the difficulty of providing dwellings near
the sourcos of employment and the question of economic rents
are still being met with. 79 houses were erected and occupied
thus completing the Council's Housing Scheme on the Victoria
Road and Charlton Lane Sites.
Blocks of flats erected by the London County Council in the
Thames Street area were also completed and provide for 396
tenements, whilst 263 houses have been erected by private enterprise.
Underground Rooms.—It was stated in the report for 1935
that there were approximately 500 basement rooms, of which a
small number might be dealt with under the relevant sections
of the Housing Act. Owing to the pressure of other work, it was
found impossible to make a detailed survey of the situation. It
is hoped in next year's Annual Report to give a statement following
such a survey, and the action taken as a result.
Overcrowding.—It is hoped in the report for 1937 to give a
statement as to the abatement of overcrowding and particulars
regarding fresh overcrowding, which may have occurred since
December 1935.
1935 Survey—Housing Act, 1935.
The position was not given graphically in the report for 1935.
The table now shown indicates the position with regard to overcrowding in the Borough existing at the end of 1935. The heavy
diagonal black line divides the table into two portions. Those
figures below the line represent the number of families overcrowded.
Those above the line on the other hand, represent the numbers
of families not overcrowded.
The completion of the survey showed that 15,981 dwellings
were inspected. The number of families involved was 20,540.
