Clinics with consequent reorganization. Extra work has been
ungrudgingly carried out by the Staff and difficulties have been
met with a spirit which merits special appreciation.
It is pleasing to record that the Infantile Mortality Rate of
49 per 1,000 births was the lowest ever recorded with the exception
of the year 1930 when the extraordinary rate of 46 occurred. This
rate is also the lowest but one among the 28 Metropolitan Boroughs.
The Rate for the whole of London is 66. The Birth Rate is somewhat
below that for 1935 and the Death Rate slightly above.
The Maternal Mortality Rate of .73 per 1,000 Births is the
lowest ever recorded for the Borough.
The health of the Borough as shown by the Vital Statistics
and prevalence of infectious diseaso is very satisfactory but should
not give rise to complacency.
Finally I desire to thank the Chairmen and Members of the
Public Health and Maternity and Child Welfare Committees, for
the kindness and consideration they have shown me since taking
over office.
I have the honour to be
Your obedient Servant,
F. R. Waldron.
